Volunteer Opportunity
This is a unique opportunity to assist an attorney by providing Spanish-language interpretation to respondent's before and after pro se (self-represented) immigration court hearings. The volunteer will work closely with the attorney to ensure Spanish-speaking clients understand legal procedures and can effectively communicate with the court.
Responsibilities
- Provide interpretation for Spanish-speaking individuals consulting with an attorney before or after attending their immigration court hearings.
- Ensure accurate and culturally sensitive communication between the attorney and client.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
- Assist with any legal documents or materials as needed, ensuring they are understood by the client in Spanish.
- Be available to attend hearings as scheduled by the attorney, with hours varying based on court dates.
Requirements
- Fluency in both Spanish and English (spoken and written).
- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Ability to interpret legal terminology accurately and in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Ability to remain neutral and impartial in interpretation.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Availability to volunteer on a flexible basis, with hours depending on court schedules (in-person in San Francisco).
- Prior experience in interpretation or translation, especially in legal settings, is preferred but not required.
