Volunteer Campground Host - Putt's Camp, Friends of Raystown Lake

Do you love camping and helping others enjoy the outdoors? The Friends of Raystown Lake are seeking enthusiastic and responsible volunteers to serve as Campground Hosts/Campmasters at Putt's Camp, situated along the shoreline of Raystown Lake, Huntingdon County, PA near mile marker 26! This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a thriving outdoor recreation space while enjoying complimentary camping.

Putt's Camp, operated by the 501 (c)(3) non-profit group, the Friends of Raystown Lake, provides a rustic and beautiful camping experience at Raystown Lake for organized groups, including Scouting America, Girl Scouts, church groups, and other youth, family and community organizations. About the Role:

Campground Hosts/Campmasters play a vital role in ensuring a positive and safe experience for all groups using Putt's Camp. You will serve as a friendly point of contact, provide assistance as needed, and help maintain the campground's pristine condition. This role draws inspiration from the Scouting America Campmaster concept (see: https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/camping/scouts-bsa-outdoor-program/what-is-the-campmaster-corps/

Responsibilities:

  • Welcoming and Assisting Groups: Greet arriving groups, provide information about Putt's Camp facilities and rules, and answer questions.
  • On-Site Presence: Be a visible presence in the campground, available to assist groups with minor issues or emergencies.
  • Light Maintenance: Perform basic campsite upkeep, such as picking up litter, cleaning fire rings and shelters, clear wooden debris from roadway, and ensuring restrooms are stocked. Report any significant maintenance needs to the Friends of Raystown Lake.
  • Promoting Safety: Encourage adherence to campground rules, youth protection, and safety guidelines, including fire safety, quiet hours, and proper waste disposal.
  • Communication: Maintain communication with the Friends of Raystown Lake regarding campground/road conditions, group feedback, and any incidents that may occur.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain a simple log of group arrivals/departures and any significant events.
  • Emergency Response: Be familiar with emergency procedures and contact appropriate authorities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for camping and the outdoors.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of camping and outdoor safety practices.
  • Willingness to enforce campground rules in a friendly and respectful manner.
  • Ability to pass a background check (required).
  • Current First Aid/Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification (preferred but not required).
  • Ability to safely operate a chainsaw to remove fallen trees and debris from roadway into Putt’s Camp (preferred but not required). Larger trees must be removed with assistance.
  • Complete an annual campmaster training/orientation program hosted by the Friends of Raystown Lake.

Time Commitment:

The time commitment is flexible and can be tailored to your availability. We encourage volunteers to commit to at least one weekend per month during the camping season (April-October). Longer stays are welcome and appreciated.

Prior to serving, you must participate in a one-day training course for campmasters offered by the Friends of Raystown Lake. This training is typically offered in late March or early April on a Saturday.
