Recruiting Organization: Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minnesota
Position Summary:
Wish granters are essential to fulfilling each child's wish. They work in teams of two or three and help the wish child brainstorm wish ideas that could bring them hope and joy. They also help create an exceptional wish experience through ongoing engagement with the child and their family.
Responsibilities:
- Sign up for wishes as a team - either with a partner of choice or with an assigned partner.
- Visit the wish child virtually or in-person and help them brainstorm wish ideas
- Complete wish paperwork and obtain necessary documentation.
- Put the magic into each wish by planning and delivering "wish boosts" - special, creative touches throughout the wish process that keep the child excited about their wish.
- Solicit in-kind donations (goods or services) and help us use resources wisely.
- Serve as a point of contact between the family and the Foundation - help keep the family updated on the status of the wish, answer questions, and develop a positive rapport with the child and family.
- Plan a "send-off" or "presentation" party for the wish child as appropriate (can be virtual, or just a delivery of a special gift, as appropriate for the wish and circumstances)
- Be a reliable, communicative, and productive member of the "wish team" - work closely with a volunteer partner and the Make-A-Wish staff to create the best possible wish experience for the child.
Volunteer Commitment:
- Participate in at least one wish per year.
- Each wish, on average, requires a time commitment of 10-15 hours over a span of about 9-12 months. However, each wish can vary greatly in the time it takes to fulfill the wish and time required as a wish granter.
- Serve as a wish granter for a minimum of one year.
Availability:
- Wish discovery visits are typically scheduled for weekday evenings or weekends based upon the schedules of the wish granters and the wish family.
Required Training:
- Completion of online orientation.
- Completion of Wish Granter Training, followed by a wrap-up call. A self-guided virtual training taking approximately 1.5 hours is offered at any time, and 1 hour wrap-up calls are scheduled 12 times a year.
Desired Qualifications:
- Love for children and comfort interacting with children ages 2 ½ to 18.
- Excellent people skills and the ability to work with people from different backgrounds and children with various medical conditions.
- Creative energy with a desire to make each wish unique and magical.
- Organized and detail-oriented.
- Ability to respond to the family, fellow volunteers and Make-A-Wish staff in a timely manner.
- Ability to pass background check
