Teach Art Remotely to Black Elders in Brooklyn

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: One Community

Who we are

The Sharing Network does something about the loneliness crisis by bringing together mostly Black, older, homebound, lower-income public housing residents in Brooklyn, NY, for activities and conversations by phone. When they join this warm, lively community, participants' lives are transformed.

Volunteer role

We seek a volunteer art teacher to lead a hands-on art group that meets for an hour each week during an 8-week term. Can you teach sculpture, collage, drawing, painting or needlework to non-artists in their 60s, 70s and 80s?

Here’s the challenge. All our meetings take place on the phone and we don’t use video. Whoever takes this position must be able to talk participants through each session without the benefit of visual cues. You don't see them, they don't see youl

We make it easier by sending out lesson plans by mail before that show students what to expect. It works. Other volunteer art teachers have led amazing groups by phone. Can you?

Requirements

  • Experience as art teacher at any level
  • Availability Mon-Sat during the day for an hour plus prep time
  • Warmth, humor, imagination
  • Interest in older people
  • Ability to communicate instructions clearly by audio only

How to Apply

If you want to positively transform the lives of seniors and possess the communication skills necessary to teach art lessons by phone, we invite you to contact us. Please send us a message that describes you experience. Tell us why you're the right person to fill this position.

Benefits

  • Contribute to enriching the lives of seniors facing loneliness
  • Enjoy the satisfaction of helping clients work creatively
  • Become part of a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to creating social impact
  • Experience the friendliness and pleasure inside the groups
  • Letters of recommendation cheerfully supplied to future employers
  • The groups are really fun
