Recruiting Organization: Trusted Mentors
About Trusted Mentors:
Trusted Mentors recruits, trains, and connects volunteer adult mentors with at-risk mentees across three main struggle areas: Homeless Prevention, Re-Entry, and Young Adults (18-24 years old having aged out of foster care or one of the above tracks). We work specifically to keep our mentees housed and out of prison. In 2023, 98% of our mentees were able to stay housed, 92% stayed out of prison, and 95% of our young adults found success in their goals.
Who We Mentor:
We mentor adults over 18 who are at risk of homelessness, re-entering from prison, or aging out of foster care. Trusted Mentors' three-track approachresponds to the unique needs often seen in our mentees’ lives.
- Mentoring for Long-term Homeless Prevention expands the support network for those leaving homelessness and populations known to be at risk, with the long-term impact of reducing homelessness.
- Mentoring for Successful Re-Entry responds to the recognition that mentoring is a significant component to successful re-entry into the community after incarceration. Ex-offenders face specific obstacles as they rebuild their lives. We also mentor pre-release to assist individuals preparing to re-enter the community.
- Mentoring for Young Adults responds to specific needs of mentoring those in the 18-24 age group with a focus on those aging out of foster care.
Your Role as a Mentor:
Mentors use their roles to provide guidance and support while acting as role models to help mentees develop personal assets and life skills.
- Offer support and encouragement. This can build courage and tenacity as mentees deal with moving forward in life.
- Act as a role model of consistent and caring behavior. This provides an image of accountability. Some of our mentees will not model consistency, but over time they recognize when the mentor follows through.
- Provide guidance. This is not in the sense of having all the answers, but in listening, asking questions, and assisting the mentee as they develop personal assets and life skills.
You do not have to be a professional counselor or have lots of experience mentoring. One of the things our mentees like is that their mentor is a volunteer, willing to give of their free time, and not a professional. It makes a difference to know their new friend cares.
Over time, we’ve learned that successful mentors have these qualities:
- A good heart and a sincere compassion for others
- A stable life
- A non-judgemental attitude
- A desire to help people meet their own goals
- Patience for when their mentees make decisions they wouldn’t have made
- Are at least 25 years old
Your Responsibilities as a Mentor:
Mentors will:
- Attend training (about 3 hours) and a follow up interview
- Meet with their mentees for an average of 6 hours per month for a year
- Help their mentee achieve their personal goals
- Submit monthly reports to staff
- Attend Recognition Nights with their mentees
- Attend Mentor Meetings for on-going support
