Deliver Meals & Hope in the DMV

ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: Food & Friends

Volunteer Description

Food & Friends delivers medically-tailored meals and groceries to clients living throughout DC, MD, and Northern VA. Our delivery radius covers over 6,100 square miles, and volunteers play a critical role in accomplishing this daily endeavor. Deliveries are made between 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Monday to Saturday, so volunteers are asked to begin their route anytime between 9:00 AM and noon. There are no evening deliveries. A typical route is 6-10 stops and can take anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete. We provide driving directions for each route.

On Mondays, we deliver to Virginia and very distant Maryland routes, like Frederick and Hagerstown; Tuesdays to Northeast DC; Wednesdays to Prince George’s County; Thursdays to Southeast and Southwest DC; Fridays to Montgomery County; Saturdays to Northwest DC.

This is a great way to serve your community and support your neighbors meaningfully. It is also a great activity to do with your friends, family, or co-workers. Volunteers must use their own vehicle, be at least 18 years old (or accompanied by someone 18 years or older), and have a valid driver's license to participate.

Volunteers must attend a virtual orientation and submit a background check before scheduling a shift. Sign up for an orientation here: https://foodandfriends.volunteerhub.com/vv2/

If you have any questions, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Yanling Li (she/her) at LLi@foodandfriends.org or call 202-269-6835.

About Us

The mission of Food & Friends is to foster a community caring for men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling.

Food and Friends is the ONLY organization in the region providing home-delivered meals and groceries to children and adults battling HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. Six days a week, our clients receive meals that are nutritionally specialized to meet their individual health needs. Our services are free of charge and based solely on the health status of those in need. With the help of more than 10,000 volunteers and thousands of generous donors, more than 1.8 million meals are delivered each year.

We believe in the power of compassion and the importance of neighbors helping neighbors, so we create opportunities for impactful and fulfilling volunteer service that helps our sick neighbors in need and builds a healthier community for all.
