Ukandu is a nonprofit in Portland, Oregon that supports children and families impacted by childhood cancer.

In Winter 2026, Ukandu is opening a family resource center called The Loft which will operate as our new programming hub and headquarters, just minutes from Doernbecher and Randall Children's Hospitals. This means year-round opportunities to create meaningful connections and build a strong community for families facing challenging times.

Loft Generalist Volunteer Job Description

As a Loft Generalist Volunteer, you will play a crucial role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for new families and participants at the Ukandu Loft.. Your responsibilities will include providing tours, assisting with meal preparation, maintaining a clean and organized space, and offering support and guidance to families who are at the Loft.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome and Orientation:
    • Greet new families and participants upon arrival, making them feel comfortable and welcome.
    • Conduct tours of the facility, highlighting key areas and amenities.
    • Provide informative orientations about the organization's programs and services.
  • Facility Maintenance:
    • Maintain a clean and organized environment by performing general cleaning tasks, such as sweeping, mopping, and dusting.
    • Sanitize surfaces and toys to ensure a safe and hygienic space.
    • Load and unload the dishwasher to keep the kitchen clean and efficient.
  • Guest Support:
    • Be readily available to answer questions and provide assistance to families and participants.
    • Offer a listening ear and support to those who may be experiencing challenges or concerns.
  • Additional responsibilities may arise!

Skills and Qualities

  • Pass criminal background check
  • Undergo training and onboarding in September 2025
  • Some volunteer roles may require the ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Flexibility and adaptability
