Recruiting Organization: Stone Soup PDX

Stone Soup PDX is a Portland-based nonprofit social venture that builds economic stability for people facing barriers to employment through hands-on culinary training and our community meals program. Our 12-week culinary program provides hands-on culinary skills while feeding residents, businesses, and those on the front lines of food insecurity across the city. Our program is based on the Catalyst Kitchens model currently employed by over 100 organizations throughout the United States.

Stone Soup PDX began operating in 2019. When the pandemic developed in 2020, we pivoted to providing meals for residents of physically distancing shelters in the Portland area, working with partners to provide over 560,000 meals to 26 locations, with over 220,000 meals coming out of the Stone Soup kitchen. We have two locations for training and production, one at 2740 SE Powell Blvd. and the other at the new Glisan Landing supportive housing project at 74th & Glisan.

Stone Soup graduated 52 participants in 2024 as we continued to rebuild our training program. We have 15 employees and a 2025 budget of $1.8 million. We are putting the finishing touches on a strategic plan for 2025-2027.

We seek a few dedicated community members to add to our 8-member volunteer board of directors as we grow our organization and impact. Board members should be committed to our mission and prepared to support it with their time, talent, and resources. While the role of each board member is unique, members are generally expected to:

  • Regularly attend board meetings, in person when possible, otherwise virtually. Meetings are scheduled every three months with others added as needed, usually on Tuesdays from 12-00-1:30pm although times vary. Members should understand Stone Soup PDX’s mission, bylaws, operations, and financial standing; read materials provided before meetings and come prepared to discuss items on the agenda; participate thoughtfully and respectfully in discussions; and support the decisions of the board.
  • Serve on one or more board committees, possibly in a leadership role.
  • Share their expertise with other board members and the management team through meetings, emails, and phone calls.
  • Volunteer at Stone Soup PDX as their skills and schedules allow.
  • Help raise funds for Stone Soup PDX from people in their network and by attending fundraising events.
  • Make a personally meaningful financial contribution to Stone Soup PDX in accordance with their situation.
  • Represent Stone Soup PDX as an ambassador to the larger community.

Board members are expected to share and promote Stone Soup PDX’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We especially seek board members who add to the diversity of our board including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, class, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, age, ability, and background.

We especially seek board members with one or more of the following skills and areas of experience:

  • DEI implementation
  • Development/fundraising
  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Nonprofit governance and board leadership

Board members are elected by the board for a term of two years with the option for re-election.

If you would like to explore board membership or other volunteer opportunities, please contact board member Bruce Burger ( bruce@burger.net) for more information.
