ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - National Headquarters

This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) International Services (ISD) team.

This opportunity requires participation in in-person activities and/or will perform work in a Red Cross facility. Volunteers will specifically support the Operations (OPS) unit working in Washington, D.C. (with no expectation for international travel).

This position supports disaster response readiness, handling the strategic inventory management and tactical day-to-day logistics activities including: development of appropriate inventory management and asset control for emergency response equipment, including receiving & handling, assembly (kitting), and re-absorption of deployable response equipment and supplies.

This volunteer must be able to report to the D.C. office located at 431 18th St. NW each week and have some availability during business hours.

Responsibilities
The volunteers will support in the following areas:

  • Develop and implement inventory control procedures and best practices for Disaster Response Equipment
  • Conduct analyses to forecast potential inventory issues
  • Complete inventory of response equipment
  • Finalize manual/guide document for response equipment management
  • Conduct presentations of the response equipment management system and guiding rules to all ISD staff
  • Maintain and improve inventory database management system
  • Initiate and lead acquisition and replenishment of response equipment
  • Equipment Handling & Up-Keep during the emergency response time
  • Interact with a variety of people from different backgrounds, cultures, internal business unit stakeholders within the International Services Department

Time Commitment:

  • 5 hours per week, with more availability needed during times of scaled-up emergency response (potentially up to 10 hours per week)
  • Most hours will be completed in person at NHQ Washington, DC office.
  • Most availability during business hours is required.

Qualifications
Required:

  • Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Responsible, dependable, mature
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks at the same time and work under deadline pressure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and SharePoint
  • Experience working within & between multiple Excel documents, across a number of database platforms, and document repository platforms.
  • Physically capable of co-lifting with a peer, a range of supplies weighing between 50-75lbs
  • Submission of resume
  • Available to report to the D.C. office located at 431 18th St NW for all volunteer activities
  • Willingness to do basic research and administrative support depending on daily priorities.

Preferred:

  • Strong interest in international disaster management, emergency response, and logistics

Length of Appointment: 1 year minimum commitment; renewable
