Mission Statement
NewRoot’s mission is to improve the experiences of young people by increasing the capacity of adults to grow restorative and social-emotional practices in learning environments. We work with individuals, whole school communities, and district partners to cultivate proactive relationships and ignite vibrant communities where youth and educators thrive. NewRoot nurtures the places we live, learn, and grow.
Description
For 25 years, NewRoot has been dedicated to fostering more restorative school cultures in Chicagoland to improve the educational experience of students. We work with roughly 30 school partners each school year in more than 20 neighborhoods across Chicago. Our work impacts more than 30,000 students each school year. The schools we work with are primarily in neighborhoods facing stark social and economic inequity and 95% of the student population we serve identifies as BIPOC. We deeply understand the needs of the school communities we serve because we at NewRoot come from the same communities. We are a Black-led and run organization with a staff majority of CPS graduates and former teachers, administrators, and coaches.
We create and deliver curriculum, tools, and responsive coaching rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) and restorative justice (RJ). Our work establishes a schooling experience or school culture and climate where students are set up to feel safe and engaged in meaningful relationships - the necessary conditions for students to be academically successful .
