Just one hour a week from you can make a lifetime of difference!
Dyslexia Tutoring Program provides free one-on-one tutoring, professional assessments, and other services to low-income children and adults with dyslexia or language-based differences in greater Baltimore. Since 1985, we have helped thousands of individuals learn how to read. All our services are free to participants, and all our tutors are volunteers.
Dyslexia Tutoring Program(DTP) is holding an Orton Gillingham tutor training course starting April 22nd, 2025! Classes meet twice a week for 5 weeks, from April 22nd to May 31st. Read on for full course schedule.
Training is FREE in return for a commitment to tutor a student in our program for 60 hours. This 30 hour, Level I Orton-Gillingham course teaches you the structured, multisensory literacy skills you'll need to tutor a student with a dyslexic learning style and help them learn how to read. DTP provides all materials and supplies and you'll receive ongoing support through monthly mentoring sessions, periodic workshops, and dedicated staff to help you and your student succeed!
WHEN:
- Tuesdays via Zoom from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and
- Saturdays in person from 9:00am to 1:00pm (last class is 9:00am to 11:00am).
- Note: there is no class on Saturday, May 24th, Memorial Day weekend.
WHERE:
- In person classes meet at The Rotunda, 711 W. 40th Street, Suite 216, Baltimore, MD 21211.

Can't make this course? Trainings are held 4-6 times a year and we'll be happy to let you know about our next scheduled courses. We have a variety of formats (in person only, hybrid, virtual) to fit your schedule.
Help our students gain one of the most basic and important life skills they'll ever need - the ability to read.
DTP tutors come from all walks of life and range in age from college students to retirees. You don't need prior experience, but we do have some basic requirements:
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong command of spoken and written English
- Ability to pass a background check
- Complete the 30 hour Orton Gillingham training
- Commit to 60 hours of tutoring for DTP

Mission Statement
The mission of Dyslexia Tutoring Program is to teach low-income youth and adults with dyslexia or language based learning differences to read. This is accomplished through professional assessments and tutoring by volunteers whom we have trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading, writing, and spelling.
Description
Dyslexia Tutoring Program (DTP) provides free one-on-one tutoring, professional assessments, and other services to low-income children and adults with dyslexia or language-based differences in greater Baltimore. Since 1985, we have helped thousands of individuals learn how to read and live with hope.
We also offer complementary programs to support our students' success in learning and life. Each year, DTP sends as many students as we can fund to summer camps designed for dyslexic learners. And during the school year, our Be Well program offers after school mental wellness sessions to help our students and their parents cope with the challenges they face in their classrooms and communities.
Why do we do this? Students with dyslexic learning styles learn differently. And need to be taught differently. But specialized resources that can help - like one-on-one tutoring - are costly and out of reach for low-income students. That's where DTP and its volunteer tutors come in. We provide all of our services free of charge. Because everything begins with reading. And we believe no one should be unable to read because of how they learn or how much they earn.
We invite you to help us change lives ... one word at a time!
