As a result of the pandemic of the last 3 years, there’s been a 7% decline in college enrollment nationwide -- we are now missing 1.25M students in college compared to 2019. Financial affordability is mission critical in getting students to college.

Money Matters is 10,000 Degrees' innovative way of helping pre-college aged students wrap their head around what it takes to fund a college education via budgeting and spending activities in a fun, interactive event. YOU DON’T NEED TO BE IN FINANCE to volunteer! All you need is a smile and a desire to support financial education for the students of our community!

Money Matters! is a fun, interactive workshop designed by 10,000 Degrees for high school juniors to learn from their decision-making that college is possible and affordable by accessing free financial aid and making thoughtful college choices for housing, etc. It takes place on high school campuses and volunteers help make this possible. Currently, we have 18 events scheduled throughout the Bay Area, including San Jose.

Students receive a mock college acceptance letter and go through a budgeting process at different stations for tuition, housing, meals, etc. Volunteers at each station help with the decision making process.

Mission Statement

10,000 Degrees' mission is to achieve educational equity and to support students from low-income backgrounds to and through college to positively impact their communities and the world. Now in our 42st year, 10,000 Degrees is a leading, equity-focused scholarship provider and college success nonprofit in California serving more than 12,000+ students and their families each year in eight Bay Area counties - San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Lake.

Description

10,000 Degrees programs provide comprehensive wraparound support, college and financial aid counseling, near-peer alumni coaching, scholarships, and financial aid management. Unlike most other college success organizations, there is no GPA requirement to participate in 10,000 Degrees programs. Our Fellowship program is a key underlining of our success. Fellows, near-peer coaches who are recent college graduates and often alumni of 10,000 Degrees, are embedded in high school and college campuses to help students navigate life both on and off-campus and throughout their college success journey. In addition to supporting high school students, we are also assisting 3,000 students who are attending 56 community colleges and 170 four-year colleges and universities in California and across the nation.
