ORGANIZATION: Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, Inc.

Position Overview:
The First Responder for our Disaster Recovery Team plays a crucial role as boots on the ground in the aftermath of disasters. This individual is responsible for delivering relief and supplies to affected seniors and communities, providing hands-on support, and ensuring immediate needs are met. First Responders must be physically fit, capable of navigating challenging conditions, and committed to serving with empathy and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Disaster Relief Operations

○ Deliver critical supplies (e.g., food, water, medical kits) to disaster-affected individuals and communities.

○ Provide on-the-ground support to seniors, including physical assistance and emotional reassurance during crises.

○ Assist in assessing immediate needs and reporting back to team leaders for additional resources.

  1. Physical and Logistical Support

○ Navigate long distances on foot, climb flights of stairs, and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

○ Work in challenging post-disaster conditions, including debris, damaged infrastructure, and varying weather.

○ Collaborate with team members and local responders to ensure efficient distribution of aid.

  1. Emergency Response and First Aid

○ Administer basic first aid and CPR as needed until professional medical assistance is available.

○ Assist in stabilizing individuals experiencing medical or emotional distress.

○ Participate in ongoing disaster drills and training exercises to remain prepared for emergencies.

  1. Training and Preparedness

○ Complete required training in CPR, first aid, and disaster response (if not already certified).

○ Participate in regular team meetings and readiness drills to maintain preparedness.

Qualifications:

● Physically fit and able to walk long distances, navigate stairs, and carry heavy loads in disaster environments.

● CPR and First Aid certified (or willing to complete training through the program).

● Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

● Compassionate, patient, and able to work effectively with seniors and other vulnerable populations.

● Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Preferred Skills:

● Experience in disaster relief, emergency response, or related fields is highly desirable.

● Basic knowledge of disaster preparedness and recovery principles.

● Previous volunteer or professional experience working with seniors or in community support roles.

Time Commitment:

● Flexible availability during disaster recovery periods, including potential extended hours and days.

● Participation in monthly training sessions, team drills, and readiness activities during non-disaster times.

Programs Offered Through Seniors in Service:


Foster Grandparent Program (FGP)

  • The Foster Grandparent Program recruits senior volunteers (55+) to go into schools and after-school programs to mentor at-risk and special needs children and provide them with one-on-one, individualized attention


Senior Companion Program (SCP)

  • The Senior Companion Program recruits senior volunteers (55+) to go into the homes of homebound, elderly clients and provide them with companionship and assistance.


Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

  • The RSVP Program recruits senior volunteers(55+) to participate more fully in the life of the community through volunteer service. The program matches the considerable wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience of this vital and rapidly growing age group with the addressing of critical needs and unresolved issues in our community.


Operation Veteran Connect

  • Provides companionship to veterans, enabling them to live independently. Supports the VA in supporting providing Whole Health support to veterans.
