Senior Disaster Support Volunteer-Speaker

ORGANIZATION: Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, Inc.

Position Overview:
The Speaker serves as the voice of our Senior Disaster Support Team, leading educational events in the communities we serve to promote disaster preparedness and resilience. This role also involves speaking at community gatherings, events, and organizations to raise awareness about disaster recovery needs, share the mission of our program, and inspire action through fundraising, resource collection, and volunteer recruitment. Ideal candidates will be confident public speakers with a passion for educating and engaging with diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities: Educational Outreach:

● Plan and deliver disaster preparedness presentations to senior communities, local groups, and organizations.

● Educate attendees on creating emergency plans, assembling disaster kits, and accessing available resources.

● Facilitate Q&A sessions and provide clear, actionable advice tailored to the audience’s needs.

Community Awareness and Fundraising:

● Speak at community events, churches, businesses, and civic organizations to raise awareness about the needs of disaster-affected communities.

● Share compelling stories of impact to inspire community involvement and support for the program.

● Encourage donations of funds, supplies, or time to help sustain and grow the task force’s efforts.

Volunteer Recruitment:

● Highlight the mission and vision of the Disaster Relief Task Force to attract new volunteers.

● Provide information about the various roles available and the impact volunteers can make in the community.

● Serve as a point of inspiration and motivation for current and prospective volunteers.

Qualifications:

● Strong public speaking skills and the ability to connect with a variety of audiences.

● Knowledgeable about disaster preparedness principles (training will be provided).

● Passion for serving seniors and building resilient communities.

● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

● Organized, reliable, and comfortable coordinating events and presentations.

● Ability to adapt presentations to suit different audiences and community needs.

Time Commitment:

● Flexible scheduling to accommodate community events and educational workshops.

● Monthly planning and strategy meetings with the Disaster Relief Task Force leadership.

● Participation in occasional training sessions to stay updated on disaster preparedness best practices.

Preferred Skills:

● Experience in public speaking, teaching, or advocacy.

● Familiarity with disaster relief, emergency response, or community outreach.

● Strong storytelling skills to engage audiences and convey the program’s mission effectively.

Programs Offered Through Seniors in Service:


Foster Grandparent Program (FGP)

  • The Foster Grandparent Program recruits senior volunteers (55+) to go into schools and after-school programs to mentor at-risk and special needs children and provide them with one-on-one, individualized attention


Senior Companion Program (SCP)

  • The Senior Companion Program recruits senior volunteers (55+) to go into the homes of homebound, elderly clients and provide them with companionship and assistance.


Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

  • The RSVP Program recruits senior volunteers(55+) to participate more fully in the life of the community through volunteer service. The program matches the considerable wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience of this vital and rapidly growing age group with the addressing of critical needs and unresolved issues in our community.


Operation Veteran Connect

  • Provides companionship to veterans, enabling them to live independently. Supports the VA in supporting providing Whole Health support to veterans.
