A great tour guide can spark curiosity for a lifetime! Many Oregonians vividlly remember their school field trip to the Capitol- Seeing the rotunda, climbing the stairs to the Gold Man, and learning about their government. You can be a part of those memories!
Visitor Services at the Oregon State Capitol relies heavily on volunteers to facilitate our school, public building, and other tour experiences. Guides share building history, Oregon history, the legislative process, and more.
Not a expert? No problem! We have a robust guide training program. Tour guides are also welcome to pursue professional certification through the National Association of Interpretive Guides to become a Certified Intepretive Guide which is a lifelong endorsement and transferrable through many historic, natural, and cultural sites.
As a guide, you'll gain valuable skills like:
- Public Speaking
- Knowledge of the Legislative Process
- Group logistics
- Interpretive Programming
- Reading your Audience
- Oregon History
And, if you opt to be one of our tower tour guides:
- Stairmaster skills! (Tour guides are not required to climb the tower - this is just an option)
Becoming a Capitol Tour guide is a great way to build your resume if pursuing musuem, performance, education, and many other fields!
