This volunteer would be assisting Forest Service employees at the Plains Tree Improvement Area in general tree farming, landscaping and outdoor activities. Position is 100% outdoors.
Volunteers work 4 days on (M-Th), 3 days off (F-Su) schedule, allowing them time to rest, and explore the beauty and adventures that Montana has to offer. Volunteers will be based out of Plains, MT, but volunteer duties could include driving a government vehicle throughout the Lolo National Forest and visiting distant seed orchard and genetic test plantations.
The volunteer is responsible for assisting with various duties in the genetic resource forestry tree improvement area including site maintenance, resource monitoring and more! Volunteers can expect to perform farming tasks, such as irrigation, mowing, weeding, insect and disease surveys.
Driving duties could include driving for multiple hours at a time when visiting different genetic resource sites, and using RTVs, ATVs, motorcycles, riding lawn mowers, tractors, trailers, etc. around the 'tree farm.’
Duties:
Volunteer duties include but are not limited to:
-Providing site maintenance in the form of mowing, weeding, and weed-eating.
-Completing maintenance activities associated with vehicles.
-Completing maintenance activities as needed at other genetic sites.
-Monitoring facilities, tree health, etc.
-Reporting to staff when repairs are needed or when incidents occur.
Location Info:
The volunteer would be based out of Plains, MT. Plains has a small grocery store, hospital services, and restaurants. Plains is a 1 hour and 20-minute drive from Missoula which offers multiple grocery stores, hospitals, entertainment, multiple restaurants and airport services.
Schedule:
-4 Days On, 3 days off (Monday - Thursday with Friday-Sunday off)
Lodging:
Plains Ranger Station may have RV pads available with hookups. No additional formal housing is available.
