Sandy Hook - Shorebird Ambassador Program

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Do you want to learn more about the coastal environment and the populations of shorebirds that rely on these ecosystems? Become a Shorebird Ambassador to educate the public on shorebird ecology, generate observation reports, and participate in events that benefit the species and coastal ecosystem!

The volunteer will sign up for shifts in advance, then travel to the shift location according to the shift type and schedule. Depending on the shift type, the volunteer may need to pick up interpretive supplies and equipment beforehand. During the volunteer shift, the volunteer will speak to the public about the importance of protecting coastal and dune habitats for threatened and endangered nesting shorebirds through roving, beach stations, education tables, and other opportunities. If needed, ambassadors may ask visitors to reduce disturbance to the shorebirds. The volunteer will request assistance from Visitor and Resource Protection staff in the event of medical emergency, harassment of animals, or non-compliant visitors.

Volunteer shifts are generally two hours in length. Volunteers determine when they are available during the park's operating hours (6AM-8PM) and sign up for a shift accordingly. The volunteer will record statistics, observations, and incidents in a log, as well as return supplies borrowed to the designated location at the end of each shift. Any trends, suggestions, and concerns are reported to the program coordinator in a timely manner.

Applications for this volunteer position close May 23, 2025 11:59PM.
