The Immaculate Conception Food program seeks a cook to prepare three meals for a soup kitchen, which runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11 AM to 12 PM.
The Franciscan order ran this soup kitchen for 140 years until 2021 when the order left, and was transferred to the Archdiocese of New York. A new Pastor was assigned to the parish. Slowly, he rebuilt with the support of volunteers to continue the program. However, we are short on volunteers who are committed to cooking/preparing meals. This program also offers a bi-monthly food pantry on Fridays, but the soup kitchen risks closing if we can't locate a volunteer to cook meals.
This volunteer has to love cooking or preparing meals for others, and have a positive up beat friendly personality, along with a great desire to support the Bronx Community's services. This soup kitchen serves between 1,500 and 2,000 meals a month. The ingredients and tools will be provided at the site. Volunteers must be able to lift 20 pounds with no problem.
The volunteer can work with the Coordinator to possibly prepare three meals on Tuesdays for three days of service from 8 AM-11 AM and allow the other volunteers to do the services alone, OR come each day to help prepare and serve the meals with the other volunteers from 8:30 AM-2 PM. The distribution of the meals is from 11 AM - 12 PM. Basic training from the program coordinator is available on-site. Still, in time, we encourage the volunteer(s) interested to take soup kitchen training through agencies that offer it for free.
This is a dynamic group of volunteers at this food program. Catholic Charities Feeding Our Neighbors takes great pride in continuing to offer support to our partner programs in need. If you love to cook we would love to have you join this team. If you love to volunteer for more than one location, we would also welcome you to become an offical Volunteer for Catholic Charities.
