ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site preserves the mansion and estate once owned by Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt. The estate, named "Hyde Park", was one of many along the Hudson River where ultra-wealthy New Yorkers retreated to enjoy outdoor pursuits during the Gilded Age. Once an exclusive playground for the ultra-wealthy, the estate is now open to all. The property includes a 54-room mansion, formal gardens, and carriage trails that have been converted to hiking paths.

The National Parks of Hyde Park, NY seek friendly Volunteer Tour Guides to give tours of the Vanderbilt Mansion. Volunteer Tour Guides work alongside Park Rangers to perform the following duties:

  • Present an established interpretive program to groups of visitors, usually between 2-25 people
  • Assist Ranger-led tours, as necessary
  • Answer visitor inquiries about site history and the local area
  • Ensure resource preservation and safety by following proper NPS procedures and giving safety messages to visitors

Volunteer Tour Guides usually serve one, four-hour shift per week. A volunteer’s shift will be assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator, based on the park’s needs and with input from the volunteer.
