ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Description:

Become part of the team that helps people connect with the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway through paddling! As a Kayak Crew volunteer, you'll play a key role in supporting our paddling programs, ensuring a safe, fun, and educational experience for all participants.


Service Details:

  • Volunteers will work on the Namekagon River, St. Croix River, and other waterbodies within the St. Croix Watershed.
  • Volunteers must attend kayak training at the beginning of the season.
  • Event shifts are typically 3-6 hours. No minimum hour commitment required. Volunteers sign up for shifts through the Conservancy’s scheduling system.

Goals for Position:

  • Provide a safe and enjoyable experience for paddle program participants.
  • Foster connections between people and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
  • Support event staff in organizing and running paddle programs.

Working Environment and Safety Considerations:

  • Work primarily takes place on rivers and lakes in the St. Croix watershed.
  • May involve spending time in natural or developed areas such as river landings and parks.
  • Requires light to moderate physical effort, including paddling, lifting, and navigating uneven terrain.
  • Must be comfortable spending several hours paddling on the water.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively on a team.
  • Must follow all safety protocols and guidelines. Personal flotation devices will be provided.

Description of Duties:

  • Assist with event setup and teardown, including loading and unloading boats and equipment.
  • Guide and assist participants during paddle programs.
  • Ensure participant safety and promote responsible recreation practices.
  • Communicate any problems or concerns to event staff.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to assist with lifting kayaks.
  • Ability to paddle for several hours.
  • Ability to navigate terrain near boat landings and parks.
  • Must attend kayak training at the beginning of the season.
