ORGANIZATION: le 85è Régiment d'Saintonge

EvacuationDay2005

Do you have a knack for laundry and/or basic garment repairs?

Help us maintain and care for our well-loved vintage uniforms. Each has been hand-made in the traditional fashion, using the traditional materials of the 18th century, and is worn by our "living history" volunteer educators and instructors, who use and dirty them in the - you guessed it - traditional manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Launder garments of various materials including some prone to dye bleed.
  • Use specialized techniques and equipment to ensure the longevity of historical costumes.
  • Inspect before and after laundering, document any stains, damage, wear
  • Collect and properly label any loose / missing notions

Requirements:

  • Experience with laundering natural textiles (protein and cellulose based)
  • Access to a high-quality washing machine or specialized laundry equipment is a plus.
  • Attention to detail and the determination to 'make things last'

Why Volunteer with Us?

  • Volunteer from home, at your pace, with no long term committment.
  • Gain unique experience in textile care and historical preservation.
  • Enjoy the satisfaction of making a tangible impact on our nonprofit's mission.

If you have the skills and enthusiasm to help us keep our costumes in top condition, we'd love to hear from you!

Optional / Additional Related Opportunities:

  • Collaborate with our team to develop best practices for garment care.
  • Assist with occasional repairs and maintenance of costumes.

About le 85è Régiment d'Saintonge

Location:

PO BOX 854, SUDBURY, MA 01776, US

Mission Statement

LE 85EME REGIMENT DE SAINTONGE/4TH MIDDLESEX MILITIA REGIMENT OF FOOT, INC. aims to enlighten and entertain audiences of all ages through historically accurate portrayals of the life experiences of the everyday people who experienced the events of the American Revolution; enabling an understanding of the past that allows for deeper understandings of the lessons learned and their applicability to current affairs.

Description

Formed in 1979, the recreated Regiment of Saintonge participated in events across the globe celebrating the bicentennial of the American Revolution and was recognized for its Esprit de Corps at the commemoration of the Siege of Yorktown in 1981. Since then, the goal of enthusiastically representing the lesser known experiences of the formative years of the United States has driven our educational and original scholarly research programs. Immersive programs allow individuals and families to re-live for themselves a life impacted by a localized rebellion turned global war; classroom and educational sessions focus on making real-world connections to the past; curriculum development efforts work to integrate history across all subject areas; youth-oriented afterschool and weekend events offer age-targeted exposure on a wide scale, providing opportunity for hands-on interaction. Efforts towards advancing academic knowledge and making it more widely available include decades of original research based on previously undiscovered period documents, transcriptions and translations of manuscripts, and a collaborative network with researchers and institutions around the world.
