The Night Sky volunteer will assist participants in exploring the park’s celestial wonders during stargazing sessions and moonlit hikes. While astronomical knowledge is not required, it is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Guide participants during stargazing sessions and moonlit hikes, pointing out constellations and celestial objects.
- Ensure the safety of all participants during events.
- Share fascinating facts about astronomy, the park's geology, history, and wildlife.
- Set up, manage, and maintain telescopes and other stargazing equipment.
- Assist event preparation.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Valles Caldera National Preserve.
- Comfortable driving at night.
- Ability to ensure participants' safety and enjoyment during events.
Equipment:
- All necessary stargazing equipment is provided by the park, although volunteers may bring their personal equipment at their discretion.
- Must be willing to allow the public to use personal stargazing equipment, if brought.
Lodging:
- Lodging will be available on a case-by-case basis if space allows after the event (for one night).
Schedule:
- The first half of the summer season: Events are held on Fridays.
- The second half of the summer season: Events are held on Wednesdays and Fridays.
