ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Join Park Rangers within the three Flagstaff Area National Monuments (Sunset Crater Volcano, Walnut Canyon, and Wupatki) in guiding visitors along interpretive backcountry hikes. This is your opportunity to experience your parks in unique ways while fostering stewardship, facilitating meaningful connections between visitors and their parks, and learning about the field of Interpretation.

Applicants must be able to safely hike on moderate backcountry terrain of cinders, sandstone, and limestone at elevations between 5,000 and 7,000 ft. Hikes can be up to 3 miles and 4 hours long. Participants must be comfortable volunteering in variable weather conditions. Duties include public speaking, hiking, and engaging with the public for up to 4 hours at a time.

Each monument has its own hike season. Volunteers can assist with hikes for any or all of these locations and time frames. A minimum commitment for one hike season in one location is required. Hikes can be scheduled for any day of the week but no more than one hike per monument per week is required.

Ranger-Led Hike Seasons:

Sunset Crater Volcano - April through October

Walnut Canyon - Memorial Day through Labor Day

Wupatki - November through March
