ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Spend time out on the water and help park rangers teach safe kayaking in weekly kayak clinics!

When: Weekly Kayak Clinics are held on Wednesday mornings as well as some Sunday mornings from June to September. Training is tentatively planned for mid-May and early June. Volunteers should assist with at least 5 kayak clinics during a full summer season.

Where: Clinics are held at Lake Yankton in Yankton, SD.

What: Kayak Program Assistants will aid park rangers at weekly kayak clinics at Lake Yankton and other interpretive kayak programs as scheduled. At each program, the volunteer will help with set up, distribute and fit equipment, monitor participants during our tour of Lake Yankton, etc. Prospective volunteers must be able to swim and should have previous experience kayaking. Kayak safety training and all equipment will be provided by MNRR.

Why volunteer:

  • Spend time out on the water!
  • Meet new people, especially other paddlers
  • Help beginner paddlers have a fun and memorable experience while learning to kayak
  • Educate the public on water safety
  • Build skills in education and interpretational programming, which can be a great addition to a resume
