Make a difference this summer by volunteering with the Nia Cultural Center Freedom School Program! This six-week program (mid-June to mid-July) empowers young scholars through literacy, cultural enrichment, and mentorship. We’re seeking dedicated volunteers to help create a supportive and inspiring learning environment!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Nia Cultural Center is to reinstate the role of the family and community in their responsibility to strengthen and improve the quality of life for our children by preparing them academically, culturally, mentally and physically to attain productive futures. To this end the children will be torchbearers toward progress.

Description

Childrens Freedom School
The Nia Cultural Center’s CDF Freedom School assists and reinforces the efforts of school districts, libraries, families, and students to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps.

High quality academic enrichment
Parent and family involvement
Social action and civic engagement
Intergenerational servant leadership development
Nutrition, health, and mental health

The Future is US
We are working to identify community conditions and social determinants of health to prevent disproportionate suspension, expulsion, District Alternative Education Placement (DAEP) referral, and juvenile justice incarceration for youth of color in Galveston.

Juneteenth Legacy Project
The Juneteenth Legacy Project (J19LP) is a Galveston-based nonprofit organization. Sam Collins is its president, and Steven Creitz and Sheridan Lorenz are vice presidents. The Galveston-based Nia Cultural Center is the Juneteenth Legacy Project’s fiscal sponsor and supporter.
