Adopt-A-Trail Volunteer

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Do you love hiking? Want to be the designated caretaker of your favorite spot along the Missouri National Recreational River? Join the MNRR team as an Adopt-A-Trail Volunteer!

When: Year-round. Volunteers should hike their designated trail a minimum of once a month. Schedules will be planned out with the volunteer's supervisor and can be flexible.

Where: Mulberry Bend Overlook (near Newcastle, NE) and/or Bow Creek Recreation Area (near Wynot, NE). Depending on interest, location, and other factors, volunteers can adopt one or both of these properties and their trails.

What: As volunteers hike their adopted trails, they collect litter, remove debris like sticks or downed vegetation, monitor site conditions, clean signs, and greet visitors. For safety, they will check in and out with their supervisor before and after their hike.

Why: By adopting a trail, volunteers help to keep these recreational areas welcoming and safe for visitors while also protecting wildlife and plants. This opportunity provides ample opportunities to spend time outdoors, getting exercise and enjoying the trails at well-loved park sites. Additionally, volunteers can gain meaningful experience working with the National Park Service, which can be a great addition to a resume.
