Position Title: Trail Maintenance
Mission statement:
To provide a clean, safe hiking experience for our visitors and provide volunteers the opportunity to make a difference in the park ecologically and physically, while having the chance to demonstrate their accrued cultural and ecological knowledge of the park.
Brief Description of Work to be Performed:
Work will include:
- General trash pick-up along designated trails
- Removing invasive plant species on the trail using hand-pruners and loppers
- Reporting major trail hazards (downed trees, washouts, etc) to the supervisor so facilities can be made aware of trail conditions and perform major trail maintenance as needed
- Removing sticks and logs out of the trail path
- Receive training and develop skills related to trail maintenance
Length of Commitment:
This Event will be running once a month throughout the year. Volunteers may be recruited at various points throughout the year. Volunteer is expected to be available at least 2 hours per event but may serve additional time based on their availability and if the needs of the program allow it.
Tools, Equipment, and Vehicles to be Operated:
- No vehicles will be operated within the scope of the position.
- Basic hand tools
Location Where Work Will Be Performed:
Location will vary but will be limited to the various established trails within Little River Canyon National Preserve. Volunteers will meet at the visitor center to fill out proper paperwork and to grab tools and equipment need for the day before heading out on the trails. Volunteers will listen to and follow directions from the NPS maintenance team.
Physical Requirements of Work:
Ability to hike over steep, uneven, rocky, and sometimes slippery terrain, and to work in adverse weather conditions to include cold and hot weather, rain, smoke, and snow. Ability to stand for long periods of time and carry equipment needed for trail maintenance. Must be able to follow directions and work with others as a team.
Incentives:
All hours will be logged and accounted for our VIP Pass. Thes same hours can be applied for Public Land Corp hours and hold well on resumes and college applications. You will also have the chance to meet other like-minded individuals who are just as interested in giving back to their local park and environment.
