ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Support staff in leading engaging outdoor programs for the public along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and throughout the greater St. Croix Watershed, fostering connections with nature and creating memorable experiences.


Service Details

  • Programs include hiking/snowshoeing, fishing/ice fishing, kayaking and more.
  • Volunteer shifts take place at various sites throughout the watershed, including parks, trails, and visitor centers.
  • Shift length will vary depending on the program but are generally 2-4 hours.
  • Attendance at group volunteer training or a one-on-one meeting with program staff is required.

Goals for Position

  • Provide support to staff during outdoor programs for members of the general public.
  • Foster connections between program participants and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
  • Create enjoyable and educational experiences for program participants.

Working Environment and Safety Considerations

  • Work Location: Work location will vary depending on the location of the program but will take place outdoors. Common locations include parks and trails.
  • Physical Requirements: The work requires light to moderate physical effort. Tasks may involve walking/hiking over steep, uneven, rocky, and sometimes slippery terrain which may present tripping hazards such as rocks and tree roots. Work may also include going inor in close proximity to water bodies such as lakes and rivers.
  • Weather Conditions: The work may include exposure to adverse weather conditions including hot and cold temperatures, rain, ice and snow.
  • Outdoor Hazards: Outdoor conditions may also include exposure to insects such as ticks, mosquitoes, and stinging insects, as well as poisonous and/or irritant plants.
  • Training: All volunteers must receive training on safety and program support protocols.

Description of Duties

  • Visit parks, visitor centers, and other sites throughout the St. Croix watershed to support outdoor activities.
  • Assist with activities and participant management during programs.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Volunteers must attend a volunteer training session or meet with program staff prior to volunteering.
  • Volunteer must be comfortable working with large groups of people.

Additional Items

  • Volunteers will have access to potential training opportunities that develop knowledge and skills and enhance service to the Riverway.
  • This volunteer will have the opportunity to work with the public in an outdoor setting and share appreciation for the diversity and beauty of the Saint Croix watershed. They will share the satisfaction of helping others and providing opportunities for people to have an enjoyable, educational, and safe park experience. They will work alongside staff and other volunteers and have opportunities to build knowledge of important park resources in a friendly, welcoming environment.
  • Volunteers who have accumulated 250 hours of service can request a National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass that provides access to more than 2,000 recreation areas managed by five federal agencies (valid for 12 months after issue).
