Join us as we remove harmful invasive species and pick up litter along Pogues Run in Brookside Park in celebration of World Water Day! Removing harmful invasive species and picking up litter will help prevent riverbank erosion, improve access to the waterway, and improve water quality. One group of volunteers will be working with handsaws alongside our Department of Native Landscapes Team to remove Asian Bush Honeysuckle along Pogue's Run, which we will then treat with herbicide. Volunteers will also drag the remaining brush towards the chipper. Another group of volunteers will be working with our Clean Neighborhood's team to pick up litter in the water itself and along the bank of the waterway. Waders will be provided! We will be splitting volunteers into two groups and giving project instruction at 9:05am the latest, please be sure to find parking ahead of the start time.
Safety: We highly recommend wearing weather-appropriate clothing and since we will be working on a slope, we require that volunteers wear closed-toed, sturdy shoes.Volunteers also must wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes in order to apply herbicide. We always recommend bringing a reusable bottle for water but we will have disposable cups available if needed. KIB will provide all supplies, such as litter grabbers, gloves, hand saws, and water waders.
Parking + Facilities: Parking is located at the Brookside Tennis Courts located at 3500 Brookside Pkwy S Dr. The Brookside Community Center opens at 12pm and has restrooms inside. Portalets are located in the park, and public restrooms can be found on Sherman Dr.
Transportation Information: Bus number 11 stop at Brookside Pkwy S Dr & Ewing St and is a 4 minute walk to the project site. Click here to plan your trip with IndyGo
This project aligns with Weed Wrangle Indiana's initiative to control invasive species that are negatively impacting our natural areas.
*While we love group attendance at volunteer projects, all participants in a group must be registered individually. Thank you!*
