Are you passionate about music, community, and making a difference in the lives of older adults?
MusicWorks is seeking bilingual volunteers who can speak Mandarin or Cantonese to help support our interactive music sessions in senior housing communities across Boston and Brookline.
Why We Need You
Many of the older adults we serve speak Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese, and some experience
language barriersthat make it difficult to fully participate in MusicWorks. By volunteering, you will
bridge these gaps, ensuring that all residents feel welcomed, included, and engaged in the joy of
music.
Volunteer Locations & Language Needs
We are currently looking for volunteers at the following locations:
Torre Unidad - 80 W Dedham St, Boston, MA 02118
1-2x per month on a Thursday or Friday
IBA (Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción) - 2 San Juan St, Boston, MA 02118
1-2x per month
Your Role as a Volunteer
- Encourage residents to sing in their language - Support participants in karaoke sessions,
helping them choose songs and feel comfortable performing. - Assist with Music Bingo - Help explain songs, lyrics, and cultural significance to make the
game more engaging for residents. - Join Zumba & Music and Mobility sessions - Encourage movement and participation in our dance-based music programs to help residents stay active and engaged.
- Translate and facilitate discussions - Help residents understand lyrics, share memories, and connect with the music and each other.
- Create a Welcoming Space - Foster a warm, social, and inclusive environment where residents feel comfortable expressing themselves.
- Support the MusicWorks Team - Provide general assistance to ensure the smooth operation of music sessions.
Who Should Apply?
We’re looking for volunteers who:
- Speak Mandarin or Cantonese fluently (or conversationally).
- Enjoy music and believe in its power to bring people together.
- Are friendly, patient, and comfortable engaging with older adults.
- Can commit to at least two MusicWorks session per month (sessions are typically 1-2 hours long).

Description
We accomplish our mission by recruiting and training caring volunteers who provide friendship, support, advocacy, and assistance to older adults living in Boston, Brookline, Newton, Cambridge, and Somerville. We have 4 volunteer programs: Friendly Visiting, Friendly Helping, Medical Escorts, and PetPals. You select the opportunity that best fits your schedule and interests, no prior experience is required, and most of our opportunities can be accessed without a car.
