Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is a wetlands oasis on the northern edge of the Mojave Desert. Preserved for thousands of migratory birds, it is an important nesting ground for the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher. Campground hosts play an important role in informing the public of the refuge’s conservation mission and many recreational opportunities. To learn more about the refuge please visit www.fws.gov/refuge/pahranagat and view our refuge’s film at https://vimeo.com/87545027 . The refuge has a small staff of about 5 people, supplemented with 5-10 volunteers depending on the time of year. The nearby town of Alamo (10-minute drive) has churches, pharmacy, gas station, small grocery store, gym, post office, salon, and library. Refuge staff and volunteers can participate in potlucks, game nights, and pickleball, and the refuge has a small workout room with treadmill, elliptical, and weight machines. Mission Statement
Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.
The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.
The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
