Are you passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of lonely and isolated seniors?

Society of Sharing is seeking compassionate individuals like you to become Group Socialization Facilitators to host gatherings for residents of a local community housing building.

Position: Group Socialization Facilitator - Senior Volunteers Needed

Volunteers needed: Multiple

Type: In-person (Downtown Toronto)

Time commitment: Approximately 4 hours per week, between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday

Reports to: Program coordinator

Position summary:

As a Group Socialization Facilitator, you will play a vital role in creating a warm and engaging environment where clients can connect, socialize, and enjoy meaningful interactions.

Volunteer duties and responsibilities:

  • Arrange snacks and drinks for gatherings.
  • Set up the meeting room prior to clients' arrival.
  • Provide assistance to clients in wheelchair positioning or preparing beverages.
  • Decorate the room for special occasions and holidays.
  • Serve drinks and snacks to clients upon their arrival.
  • Engage in conversations with clients, fostering introductions and connections.
  • Offer to play games or crafts to interested clients.

Volunteer skills and qualifications:

  • Be 18 years old or older.
  • Have a sincere interest in working with seniors and adults with disabilities.
  • Possess sensitivity to the needs and challenges faced by older adults.
  • Exhibit patience, compassion, and a desire to help vulnerable and isolated seniors.
  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Ability to speak English and other languages is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Experience in initiating conversations and engaging clients in social activities is an asset.

Other requirements:

  • Vulnerable sector check.
  • Proof of full vaccination or medical exemption certificate.
  • 2 references.

Training and orientation:

  • Will be provided.

Society of Sharing: Inner-City Volunteers is a non-profit organization that improves quality of life, and reduces isolation and vulnerability among seniors and adults with physical disabilities, in the downtown Toronto community. We achieve this by providing friendly visiting programs, medical and shopping escort, telephone reassurance and group socialization with the support of our volunteers.
