Visitor Services assistants support the Interpretation division, assisting primarily in the visitor center, in the cave, and in surface environments including pavilions, amphitheaters, visitor use areas, and hiking trails.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Trailing ranger-led cave tours, ensuring visitor and resource safety, and assuring that tour groups stay together and follow park policies.
- Assisting at the visitor information desk and the visitor center.
- Answer visitor questions, give directions, and provide materials such as maps, information packets, and brochures.
- Assisting with crowd control, checking tickets, monitoring noise level in the cave, monitoring white-nose syndrome station
- Assisting with pre-tour talk relaying tour rules and regulations to tour groups.
- Other duties as needed.
Other Duties Include:
- Roving exhibit areas and areas outside visitor center.
- Assisting with and promoting evening programs and special events when offered.
- Helping guides prep gear and coveralls for wild cave tours and helping clean these items after tours.
- Occasionally assisting with other supportive tasks such as filing paperwork and restocking supplies.
- Other duties as needed.
Tools, Vehicles, and Equipment: All tools and equipment needed to perform duties will be provided by the park. Volunteers over 18 with a drivers' license and a clean driving record may use park vehicles for some duties.
Physical Requirements: Work is often physical in nature and may involve standing or sitting for extended periods as well as walking long or short distances over varying terrain in both cave and surface environments. In some instances, you may be required to walk up to 6 miles a day. Temperatures on the surface vary, while cave temperatures typically stay around 55 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity. Cave tour routes vary from easy to moderately strenuous, and may involve bending, stooping, navigating tight spaces, low light environments, and climbing over 1200 stairs throughout the day in some instances.
Other Requirements
- Obtain/maintain Basic First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Maintain a friendly, approachable, and professional demeanor while interacting with visitors and representing the park.
- Comfortable interacting with high volumes of people on a daily basis, answering questions that are often repetitive in nature, and public speaking in general.
- Willingness to follow rules and directions, adhere to a schedule, and work as a member of a team.
- Maintain a clean and professional appearance and adhere to uniform requirements at all times. Specific uniform/dress code requirements for this position will be determined by the volunteer supervisor and program coordinator.
- Background check will be required.
