The Homeless Garden Project (HGP), founded in 1990 in Santa Cruz, California, provides job training, transitional employment, and support services for people experiencing homelessness. Our community-focused programs take place on our 3.5-acre organic farm and through social enterprise, fostering sustainability, job development, and community engagement.
The Administrative Assistant Volunteer position provides general office and administrative support for all aspects of the Homeless Garden Project. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about community service and want to gain experience in nonprofit administration while making a meaningful impact.
This position is 10-15 hours per week, so it requires a big commitment but is ideal for someone who wants to see the impact of their efforts.
Responsibilities include:
Answer telephones and receive visitors, serving as the initial point of contact, including responding to general email inquiries.
Maintain the Executive Director's calendar.
Assist in preparing for Board and Committee meetings.
Attend semi-monthly Staff meetings, record notes, and share with staff.
Support staff with daily clerical tasks, including data entry for reports, contracts, and grants as needed.
Maintain files and follow records retention procedures, including keeping the Board Google Drive updated with relevant documents.
Work with other volunteers in the office
Qualifications
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to handle shifting priorities in a busy office environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
Commitment to confidentiality and discretion.
