ORGANIZATION: VANTAGE Aging RSVP

(Peak months: May - September; Non-peak months: October - April)

As a South Street Ministries Bike Shop Volunteer, you will assist the Program Director and Bike Shop Coordinator in various aspects of programming. Individuals looking to serve as a Bike Shop Volunteer should be open and approachable and seek to truly connect with the individuals we serve. In addition, an overall willingness to learn and be helpful is necessary to succeed in this role. Your specific responsibilities will vary depending on the nature of the engagement and audience. However, you can expect to:

  • Meet the minimum required criteria for contractors and volunteers, including background screenings, as laid out by South Street Ministries and our various partner organizations.
  • Our various partners may include but are not limited to: Better Kenmore, Just A Dad From Akron, Summit Metro Parks, AMHA, CJR3, Grace Church - Barberton, SprocKids, APS, and Hoban.
  • Actively participate in the planning and execution of Bike Shop activities and events.
  • Events may include but are not limited to, Thursday evening Bike Shop and Saturday evening Bike Shop Rides, Kenmore First Fridays, and end-of-year activities such as picnics and bonfires.
  • Assist in maintaining and advancing the Bike Shop & South Street Cycles programs and cultures.
  • Assist in community outreach and organizational visibility efforts by: canvassing, tabling, and attending community meetings. South Street Ministries Volunteers working out of the Kenmore location may also be asked to assist Better Kenmore with beautification and additional canvassing efforts.
  • Be willing to learn new skills and tasks, such as essential bike maintenance and repair. Examples include: fixing flat tires and rusted chains, adjusting brakes, and tuning gears, with guidance and supervision.
  • Be willing to act as a mentor to all. Meeting individuals where they stand; offering guidance and support as necessary when warranted or solicited.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • A basic mechanical background is preferred, but training will be provided
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

VANTAGE Aging promotes positive aging through a variety of programs and services for older adults. Our nonprofit organization serves 38 counties and is headquartered in Akron, Ohio. In Summit and Medina Counties, we facilitate the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for those 55 and older who want to make a meaningful impact in the community. We also offer employment training, home care and home health aide assistance, nutrition and home-delivered meal services, alcohol and drug addiction counseling, and mental health and prevention services.
