Mount Rainier Night Skies Interpretation Volunteer

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Duties:

  • Volunteer(s) (couple or individual) will work with Interpretation Night Skies Team to plan and present Night Skies Programs to visitors. A minimum of 32-36 hours (total per couple or individual) is required to be worked per week to receive housing.
  • Volunteer(s) will help with set-up and use of Night Skies equipment: telescopes, binoculars, and other night skies equipment.
  • Volunteer(s) will help visitors to participate in night skies programs by assisting them with Night Skies props and equipment, and by answering questions.
  • Volunteers may operate government vehicles used for transportation to Paradise Night Skies location (from Longmire).
  • Volunteers may be asked to spend a few hours during their workday assisting visitors at Interpretive Information desk by providing park information and trip planning advice.

Qualifications:

  • Volunteer experience with telescope operation preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of basic astronomy preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work at night in the dark required.
  • Ability to work with a team of volunteers and paid staff to facilitate a great night skies experience for a diverse visiting public required.

Training:

Volunteer will be provided with training on helping to facilitate a Night Skies program to visitors. This will include training on how to operate relevant equipment listed above. Training on working with visitor participants (up to 200+ per night) provided.


Season/Hours:

  • Minimum dates are June 23-August 31, 2025 (up to 2-weeks prior to or following these dates is negotiable).
  • 32-36 hours per week (total if couple).

Housing:

A self-contained vehicle (trailer/RV) is required for this position. Provided "housing" is a trailer pad with water-power-septic provided.
