Role Description

Could you help an international health organisation by participating in shaping the health we want to see by 2050? The Strategic Plan sets out the health impact and outcome to collectively achieve by 2050.

The Africa Health Strategic Plan (Africa 2050 Health Strategy) is a blueprint for the African Health Organisation (AHO). It sets out the health planning, delivery, impact and outcome results that AHO and its partners commit to achieving collectively by 2050.

By 2050, Africa aims to achieve the highest attainable standard of health, with equity and well-being for all people throughout the life course, universal access to health, universal health coverage, resilient health systems, research and innovation, and quality health services.

AHO seeks qualified professionals from different fields, from medicine to engineering, geography to sociology, public health to the environment, global development to climate change, medical technology to marketing and finance, artificial intelligence to criminology, digital health to economics, housing to food and nutrition, and religion to tradition, custom and heritage.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct in-depth research and analysis to identify emerging health, traditional, cultural, environmental and socioeconomic trends, competitive landscape, and potential growth opportunities.
  2. Develop and implement the Strategic Plan (Africa 2050 Health Strategy) and initiatives aligned with the organisation's vision, mission, and goals.
  3. Monitor and evaluate health trends, competitor activities, and service user/customer behaviour to identify potential risks and opportunities.
  4. Analyse health and socioeconomic data to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of current strategies and recommend improvements or corrective actions.
  5. Lead the annual planning process, including setting objectives, defining key performance indicators, and establishing action plans.
  6. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships and alliances to drive business growth and enhance organisational capabilities.
  7. Prepare and present strategic recommendations, business cases, and progress reports to senior management and key stakeholders.
  8. Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by encouraging new ideas and approaches.
  9. Ensure effective communication and alignment of strategic initiatives throughout the organisation by creating and implementing communication plans.

Education and Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in business administration or business studies, public health, medicine, sociology, psychology, anthropology, art and design, environmental science, agriculture, engineering (chemical, mechanical, electrical, electronic, aerospace, and civil engineering), biological sciences, marketing, biology, sciences, climate change, health and social care, dentistry, pharmacy, social media, journalism, criminology, geography and GIS, informatics, , geology, languages, politics, global development, international development, international relations, traditional medicine, theology, statistics, mathematics, law, creative and cultural, nursing, education, paramedic, information technology, social media, music, classics, management, accountancy, audit, taxation, social work, sports sciences, criminology, genetics, plant sciences, botanic, zoology, veterinary sciences, research, laboratory, data sciences, food sciences, political science, archaeology, architecture, computer sciences, STEM, natural sciences, epidemiology, politics, arts and humanities, drama, museum, archive, philosophy, economics, or a related field. A Master's degree or doctorate is preferred.
  2. At least 3 years of proven experience in business and strategic planning, market analysis, or related roles, preferably in a similar medical, health, voluntary and community sector and global health.
  3. Strong understanding of budgeting and financial principles and ability to analyse financial statements and performance metrics.
  4. Demonstrated experience in developing and executing successful strategic plans.
  5. Familiarity with medical industry best practices, trends, and emerging technologies.
  6. Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), project management and strategic planning software such as PRINCE 2.
  7. Familiar with PESTEL and SWOT analysis in strategic planning.
  8. Excellent written, verbal and communication skills.
  9. Ability to speak one of Africa's widely spoken languages would be an added advantage e.g. Afrikaans, Amharic, Arabic, Bemba, Berber, Chewa, Chinese, Dinka, English, French, Fula, Fulani, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Igbo, Italian, Japanese, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Kongo, Korean, Lingala, Malagasy, Mandinka, Nambia, Ndebele, Nyanja, Oromo, Portuguese, Russian, Sango, Sesotho, Shona, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Swati, Thai, Tigrinya, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Vietnamese, Xhosa, Yoruba, Zulu, etc,

Strategic Planning Required Skills

    1. Proven experience in strategic planning, management or leadership, preferably in health and social care, medicine, public health or managerial roles in your specialist areas.
    2. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
    3. Excellent leadership and collaboration abilities to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
    4. Exceptional strategic thinking and business acumen to understand complex market dynamics and identify growth opportunities.
    5. Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to stakeholders at all levels.
    6. Advanced proficiency in market research and competitive analysis techniques.
    7. Proficiency in using strategic planning software and tools.
    8. Strong project management skills to drive the implementation of strategic initiatives.
    9. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
    10. High level of self-motivation, initiative, and ability to work autonomously.

Funding and Finance

The role will involve seeking and securing funding and finance for the specific goals, objectives, targets, and outcomes. You will work with AHO President, the Board and senior management to research and identify public, private, philanthropic, individual giving and legacy funding and finance. Each volunteer will have the opportunity to choose their goal and set a fundraising target to achieve. If the volunteer successfully meets their goal, they will be offered a fully paid job to head the delivery of their chosen goal supported by a qualified senior manager.
