The South Central Literacy Council is seeking a volunteer ESL Conversation Class Instructor to help adult learners improve their English-speaking skills in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Role Overview

The instructor will facilitate a small-group conversational English class using prepared lesson plans or, with approval, create their own. Lessons focus on real-world topics and practical language use to help learners gain confidence in speaking, listening, and understanding English.

What We Provide
  • Pre-made lesson plans to guide each session
  • Training and shadowing opportunities to ensure comfort and readiness
  • Ongoing support from the Program Director
Responsibilities
  • Lead a structured yet flexible ESL conversation class
  • Encourage participation and create a comfortable learning atmosphere
  • Use the provided lesson plan or submit an alternative for approval
  • Communicate with the Program Director for feedback and support
Ideal Volunteer
  • Patient, encouraging, and adaptable
  • Comfortable leading discussions and guiding conversations
  • No prior ESL teaching experience required-training is provided
Commitment
  • Class meets weekly (exact schedule to be discussed)
  • A consistent commitment is preferred to build rapport with learners

The South Central Literacy Council provides adult basic education to help individuals improve reading, writing, math, English language skills, and digital literacy. We offer 1:1 and small group instruction, ensuring each learner gets personalized support.

Our Programs
  • 1:1 Tutoring for literacy, ESL, and HSE preparation.
  • ESL Conversation Classes to improve speaking and comprehension.
  • High School Equivalency (HSE) Prep for GED success.
  • Digital Literacy Workshops teaching essential technology skills.
  • Workplace & Community Readiness to support job and life skills.
