Volunteer in the Clothing Closet at Dayton's Bluff Elementary

Achievement Plus is a 20+ year partnership between Wilder and Saint Paul Public Schools in support of student and family success. Achievement Plus collaborates with a variety of community partners. At Dayton’s Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary, we partner with Hope for the Brave, who recently opened a clothing closet for the Dayton’s Bluff community.

The clothing closet works in conjunction with the Achievement Plus Family Center at Dayton’s Bluff and follows the same schedule. We are seeking volunteers to assist families as needed in the clothing closet. The clothing closet receives many donations the volunteer will be responsible for sorting and displaying in the room.

Responsibilities:

  • Welcome visitors (students, families, neighbors) as they arrive at the clothing closet by asking what they need help with and generally engaging in conversation.
  • Assist families with finding the type of clothing and size needed.
  • Maintain simple records of items distributed and donated by handwriting on a basic form.
  • Assist in keeping the clothing closet clean and organized by hanging up or folding clothes, sorting items and wiping or dusting the area.
  • May utilize language line service to communicate with visitors who do not speak English.
  • Bring any questions or concerns to your onsite supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience and/or passion for working with families.
  • Ability to interact with and assist families of varying backgrounds, cultures and identities, including race, ethnicity, class, orientation, ability, age, gender, gender expression, religion, etc.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent attendance over large portions of the school year.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds infrequently and repetitively stock items.
  • Helpful if volunteer can speak Karen or Spanish (not required).
  • Complete a background check (Wilder covers the cost).
  • Patience while working with families.
  • Energetic but calming spirit.
  • Able to self-direct in interactions with families.
  • Helpful demeanor and strong customer service.
  • Highly respectful of confidentiality.
  • Dependable and committed to a consistent schedule.
  • Option to volunteer solo or in a pair.

Schedule and Location:

  • Total time requirement: A minimum of 3 hours per week (more is possible & helpful), ideally through the end of the school year on June 10. Option to continue during the summer or next school year.
  • Time: Choose a 3-4 hour shift during open hours from 9:00am - 2:00pm on Monday
  • Site: Dayton’s Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary School, 262 Bates Ave (enter at 800 Conway St), St. Paul, MN 55106
