ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Volunteers - In - Parks (VIP) assist the National Park Service in many ways including assisting with ground maintenance, including minor landscaping/gardening, minor construction, and interior/exterior painting projects in the Schoodic district of Acadia National Park (ANP). This is a partnership volunteer position with Schoodic Institute (S.I.) and ANP and will focus heavily on the maintenance of the Schoodic Education and Research Center Campus. The volunteers will be supporting the Maintenance Division of both organizations and performing duties that would otherwise not be able to get accomplished due to lack of time, proper skill, and resources. In addition, the volunteer will be frequently interacting with the public, answering questions and providing general orientation. Volunteers are responsible to attend safety training as appropriate for their assigned tasks. There may be other duties by mutual agreement. Volunteers are not to perform activities beyond their physical or medical capabilities.


Major Duties:

· Removing weeds and debris from landscaping plots.

· Cut back overgrown vegetation.

· Assisting with the ongoing planting and upkeep of a vegetable and herb garden.

· Assist with interior and exterior painting projects.

· May be asked to perform other light duty maintenance tasks as able.


Requirements:

· Must have a camper or RV.

· Must volunteer 32 hours a week to maintain free housing.

· Must have experience and be comfortable with basic landscaping.

· Must have experience and comfort with performing minor maintenance tasks.

· Always be professional while interacting with the public, as incumbent will represent ANP and S.I.

Physical Requirements of Work:

Work projects require frequent stooping, bending, and as well as the ability to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to carry objects up to 30 lbs. and be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces.


Work Environment: Work will be mixed between inside and outside projects. When outside, volunteer will be potentially exposed to inclement weather, hot and cold temperatures, insects, as well as steep grades, and slippery surfaces.
