Visitor Center Assistant

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Support staff in providing excellent customer service and interpretive assistance to visitors at the St. Croix River Visitor Center (St. Croix Falls, WI) and/or the Namekagon River Visitor Center (Trego, WI). Foster connections with visitors and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway by sharing information about park resources and promoting responsible recreation.


Service Details

  • Volunteers will report to either the St. Croix Visitor Center and/or the Namekagon River Visitor Center.
  • Shift length will vary, but volunteers are asked to work at least eight hours per month.
  • The St. Croix River Visitor Center is open seven days a week from 10:00am-5:00pm during the summer season. The Namekagon River Visitor Center is open Thursdays through Mondays from 10:00am to 5:00pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Goals for Position

  • Provide excellent customer service: Greet and assist visitors, answer questions, and share information about the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
  • Promote responsible recreation practices: Encourage visitors to enjoy the park safely and responsibly.
  • Assist with park operations: Help with tasks such as staffing the information desk, selling bookstore items, and maintaining the visitor center.

Working Environment and Safety Considerations

  • Work Location: St. Croix River Visitor Center or Namekagon River Visitor Center.
  • Physical Requirements: Light physical effort, including standing or sitting for long periods of time, bending, and lifting.
  • Safety: Follow safety protocols, read and acknowledge the Job Hazard Analysis, and be aware of personal surroundings and potential hazards.
  • Exposure: May be exposed to thorny or irritant plants, insects, and weather conditions.

Description of Duties

  • Greet and orient visitors, answer questions, and provide safety information.
  • Staff the information desk, handle in-person and phone contacts, and assist with operational tasks.
  • Research topics related to the Riverway to build knowledge of the area.
  • Assist with set up and clean-up of programs.
  • Assist with maintaining the native gardens.
  • Conduct all on-the-job activities safely and contribute to a safe work environment.
  • Contribute positively to the team environment.
  • Interact professionally with members of the public and event staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Prior training or certifications are not required.
