Organization Description

One Cool Earth is a nonprofit organization in SLO County creating school garden programs that grow healthy, happy and smart youth. We believe every child deserves a place to grow. One Cool Earth was founded in 2001 and is currently providing garden based education at 36 public schools including a partnership with Cal Poly. The Play Grove is One Cool Earth’s newest early childhood program that brings together garden education with outdoor play.

Position Description:

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated part-time volunteer to join our team and help facilitate outdoor play experiences for young children ages 3-5.

As a volunteer, you will support nature-led play, exploration, and garden activities carried out at One Cool Earth’s headquarter garden in San Luis Obispo. Volunteers are expected to be at the Play Grove site from 8:30-12 pm on Thursdays. Your tasks will include:

• Stepping back and observing children playing

• Assisting with children feeling sad when their parents leave in the mornings

• Keeping an eye out for any safety concerns while on morning hikes with the group (making sure children are in designated areas, ensuring they are playing safely together)

• Assisting with different guided play activities (i.e. painting, reading corner, arts and crafts)

You must have the following certifications:

• Ability to obtain Fingerprinted / background checks (One Cool Earth will reimburse for any expenses)

• First aid certification or willingness to obtain

• CPR certification preferred

Must be able to:

• Lift 50 lbs

• Crouch, squat, kneel

• Get muddy / dirty while on outdoor adventures

• Be comfortable being outdoors in all weather conditions
