ORGANIZATION: The Kampong

Education volunteers at The Kampong assist with s chool programs for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade in botany, ecology, horticulture, ethnobotany, history and culture. In addition, they lead or offer support for life-long learning workshops and classes for the general public designed to inspire and educate adults and families. All programming at The Kampong is in support of our mission and designed to increase plant awareness and appreciation.

Volunteers receive training in:

  • Guiding school groups in hands-on, inquiry-based programs in various garden zones
  • Check-in, set-up and break-down for school group programs as well as life-long learning workshops and classes
  • The history of The Kampong as well as plant science topics relevant to the living collections

Mission Statement

The Kampong is part of The National Tropical Botanical Garden located in Hawaii whose mission is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems and cultural knowledge of tropical regions.

Description

The Kampng is an 11-acre botanic garden that was the former home of renowned plant explorer David Fairchild and his wife Marian, daughter of Alexander Graham Bell.

The Kampong has a unique collection of rare and exotic plants: hundreds of varieties of tropical fruits, including mango, avocado, citrus, jackfruit, guava, lychee and sapote; dazzling floweiring trees; healing herbs and spices; numerous species of palms and cycads, heliconias, water lilies and bamboo.
