Any availability within Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm timeframe

Commitment: Minimum of 3-4 hours a week for at least 3-months

JVS is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency. Our mission is to empower individuals from diverse communities to find employment and build careers; and to partner with employers to hire, develop and retain productive workforces.

JVS provides a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce.

Program/Department Overview:

JVS’s Refugee Employment Services (RES) has provided direct employment services to local refugee populations for over 40 years to help them build skills and secure gainful employment. These services are offered to refugees, political asylees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, certain humanitarian parolees, certified victims of human trafficking, and other work-authorized immigrants. Services include job search assistance , resume and interview preparation, cultural orientation, pre-employment vocational English language classes, skills training, job placement and follow-up and post-employment support. JVS also partners with over 1,400 employers in hospitality, retail, agriculture, education, health care, sales, manufacturing, and business; and supports participants in finding and maintaining employment that can lead to successful careers and build economic mobility.

Responsibilities:

In collaboration with JVS staff and partners, volunteer s will help clients overcome barriers to employment so that JVS Career Coaches can help them achieve employment and career advancement. V olunteer s will be trained b y JVS staff; learn ing about issues related to resettled refugees and political asylees and knowledge in workforce development while mak ing a positive contribution for local refugee and immigrant communities.

  • Screen and conduct client intakes for employment programs and c omplete need s assessment.
  • Provide case management support including access to basic needs, immigration referrals, and other support .
  • Collaborate with JVS staff and interns to support clients’ participation in JVS programs and promote clients’ socioeconomic stability and growth.
  • Maintain clear and up-to-date documentation for all services provided directly to clients.
  • Participate in staff meetings and team-based projects as needed , if possible.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Related experience is welcome. Training will be provided.
  • Ability to volunteer in-person or a hybrid shift (1 shift a week in-person and 1 additional shift virtual).
  • Interest in working with people of various linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds.
  • Commitment to learning techniques for providing effective services to support refugees’ and immigrants’ employment
  • Ability to collaborate as part of a team with staff and other volunteers/interns.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail
  • Preferred language skills in Haitian Creole, French, and/or Spanish , but not required .
