The Chippewa National Forest is looking for hosts who are energetic, enthused and love to work with visitors. The Chippewa National Forest is recruiting for volunteers to work at Norway Beach and Cut Foot Sioux Visitor Centers. These two small visitor centers which each see about 5,000 visitors every summer. Volunteer hosts provide information and education opportunities for those campers and community members.
Key duties for visitor hosts include:
1) Provide information about Forest recreation and natural resources
2) Assist the seasonal naturalist with program set up and with self-guided activities in Visitor Center
3) General upkeep and maintenance of the Visitor Center facility
4) Book and theme item sales through local interpretive association (books, shirts, local gifts)
5) General maintenance of the VIC Pollinator Garden and upkeep of bird feeders
6) Daily VIC Opening and closing
Volunteers must enjoy working with people, work well with the larger VIC/Recreation/District team, be flexible with changing situations (weather and programs) and be able to work with little supervision. While presenting programs or leading hikes is not part of the job descriptions,
volunteers are asked to assist in setting up hands-on rainy-day activities and assisting the naturalist. Volunteers interested in presenting programs or demonstrating craft/outdoor skills are always appreciated! New hosts would be joining returning volunteers, splitting the work week at the VICs. Occasional part-time helping at VIC and assisting with special events would be appreciated if available.
Hosts will be provided a campsite for an RV or Camper and will have electric and water, one site has a storage tank. We prefer hosts willing to staff at the VIC for three to four days per week. Hosts will be re-imbursed for incidental expenses at $25 per day volunteering. Campsites are very nice and have lake views. Working three to four days a week allows volunteers to relax at the lake or explore the area on their days off. There is also a bunkhouse at Cut Foot if housing is needed with showers and complimentary washer and dryer at the Cut Foot VIC.
