REPORTS TO: Events Director, Community Engagement & Volunteer Manager
COMMITMENT: Pride Planning Committee Meetings; Pride Festival Week

SUMMARY: The Safety & Security Lead is a strategic volunteer position responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of safety strategies for the Sacramento Pride March & Festival. This role works closely with the Pride Director to create and execute comprehensive safety plans that align with local, state, and federal regulations. The Safety & Security Lead also manages the recruitment and coordination of volunteers to ensure all safety and security operations are effectively executed. Additionally, the role involves fostering relationships with local emergency services to ensure a safe and inclusive festival environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Safety Policy Development: Collaborate with the Pride Director to develop and implement OSHA-compliant safety policies, procedures, and contingency plans for the festival.
2. Risk Assessments: Conduct proactive risk assessments and safety audits to minimize hazards and ensure the health and safety of attendees, staff, and volunteers.
3. Emergency Services Coordination: Build and maintain positive working relationships with local emergency services, including the Sacramento Fire Department and Sacramento Police Department, to support festival operations.
4. Collaboration: Work closely with the Entertainment & Stage Lead and other team members to ensure the privacy and safety of performers both on and off stage. Work closely with the Accessibility Lead to ensure a safe and accessible environment for all attendees.
5. Compliance Management: Oversee adherence to local, county, state, and federal laws regarding food, alcohol, and cannabis consumption.
6. Volunteer Recruitment & Training: Actively recruit, train, and manage volunteers to support all safety and security operations at the festival.
7. Communication: Maintain consistent communication with Pride Committee members, providing updates and ensuring alignment on safety protocols.
8. Event Logistics: Participate in all phases of festival planning, execution, and post-event debriefs to ensure safety measures are integrated and evaluated.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Passion for The Center’s mission to create a thriving LGBTQ+ community and a commitment to follow all organizational policies and procedures.
2. Proven experience working with LGBTQ+ communities and understanding issues relevant to marginalized groups.
3. Strong commitment to anti-racism and racial equity principles.
4. Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA standards and local/state safety regulations.
5. Experience developing and implementing health and safety policies for large-scale events.
6. Ability to work effectively in diverse, intersectional environments with individuals of varied backgrounds and abilities.
7. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; public speaking and conflict resolution training are a plus.
8. Availability to attend bi-weekly Pride Committee meetings, pre-event activities, and post-event debriefs.
9. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. A minimum of 5 years of experience in safety management, environmental safety, or a related field; event management experience is highly desirable.
2. Demonstrated success in managing teams of 10 or more people.
3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive), database systems, and social media tools.
4. Bilingual proficiency in English and another language, such as Spanish, ASL, Mandarin Chinese, Hmong, Hindi, Vietnamese, Tagalog, or Punjabi, is preferred.
5. Physical ability to perform tasks, including working outdoors in summer conditions, standing or sitting for extended periods, navigating tight spaces, lifting up to 50 pounds, and operating office equipment. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.
6. Successful completion of a criminal background check. Applicants with a criminal history, except for violent crimes, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
7. Commitment to maintaining a drug-free workplace. Volunteers must not report for service under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
8. Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Volunteers must provide proof of full vaccination, evidence of a scheduled vaccination appointment, or an approved medical or religious exemption prior to starting service.
