ORGANIZATION: U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management

The Yukon River Crossing Contact Station is located 140 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska (nearest city), where the Dalton Highway crosses the Yukon River. Here, the half-mile wide Yukon flows through a scenic canyon surrounded by rolling hills blanketed with birch and spruce trees. Moose, bears, and occasionally wolves roam through the area. The Yukon River Crossing is not a town - facilities include a boat ramp, a small hotel and restaurant, a gas station and tire repair service, Five miles to the north there are additional facilities in the 5-Mile Campground area which include: an artesian well, RV dump station, Alaska Dept of Transportation station and a BLM administration site with two cabins and a small shower. BLM does not take reservations at 5-Mile Campground, so all sites are first come first serve. The work schedule is 8 hours a day, five (5) days on and two (2) days off, approximately 40 hours a week. Volunteers receive a non-taxable reimbursement for each day worked at $66.00 per day. There is no cell phone coverage. Volunteer are provided with a Satellite phone to make daily safety and data calls. The Arctic Circle Campground/Visitor Contact area is 60 miles north of the Yukon River. The Coldfoot Camp and the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center are located 120 miles north of the Yukon River. The Coldfoot Camp facilities include a small hotel and restaurant, an airstrip, an Alaska Dept of Transportation station, a post office, a gas station and tire repair service. The Arctic Interagency Visitor Center is an award-winning full-service visitor center which provides opportunities to e xplore exhibits, walk the nearby nature trails, or join an evening program to learn more about recreational opportunities along the Dalton Highway and the special landscapes and people of the far north. Duties include staffing the contact station, providing both logistical and educational information to visitors, running a small Alaska Geographic bookstore and various maintenance tasks, such as emptying trash containers, picking up litter and cleaning vault toilets.
