Clean Day LA - Wildfire Prevention Brush Clearance
ORGANIZATION: L.A. Works
Please visit the new page to apply.
Clean Day LA is a countywide wildfire mitigation effort focused on removing excess brush and debris from streets and public spaces. L.A. Works is mobilizing a large-scale, community-led cleanup effort. This is a volunteer-powered initiative to reduce fire risk outside of burn zones and restore safety to affected areas. By working together, we can make a significant impact in reducing wildfire risks.
Why: Wildfires are a natural part of California's ecosystem, but climate change and urban expansion have increased their frequency and intensity. By removing dry brush from public areas, we reduce fire hazards, protect communities, and contribute to a more resilient environment. Sign up and we will provide information about sites as we identify locations for you.
Who: Anyone passionate about wildfire prevention and community resilience! We welcome:
Individuals looking to take direct action against climate change.
Community groups and organizations ready to make an impact.
Volunteer Leaders who can guide and support cleanup efforts in their area.
What to Expect: Volunteers will help clear dry vegetation that could become fuel for wildfires, bag the debris, and ensure it's placed in a safe curbside pickup location. This effort is designed to make neighborhoods safer while engaging the community in direct climate action.
Brush removal: Volunteers will work in small teams to clear and bag dry brush.
Site-based sign-ups: Locations will be posted as they are identified, and volunteers can choose their preferred site.
Hands-on teamwork: Expect to engage in physical work using hand tools like rakes and pruners--no power tools will be used.
Impact tracking: We will monitor the number of bags filled and areas cleared to measure collective progress.
What's Required:
Time Commitment: Shifts will vary by site, typically 3-4 hours.
Physical Demands: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Essential Items: Volunteers must bring their own filled water bottle and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen).
Safety Protocol
To ensure a safe and effective cleanup, all volunteers must:
Wear an N-95 or P-100 mask to protect against airborne particles.
Dress in long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy closed-toed shoes (boots recommended).
Use work gloves to protect hands while handling brush.
Follow all safety briefings and work in designated areas only to avoid hazards.
