We save all kinds of historic fabric from the landfill through salvaging and accepting donations that come from old buildings. Once a month we open our doors to the public and offer these items for sale so they might find a new home and be reused! Our warehouse is in a brick old Ice House and we open every 2nd Saturday of each month (called Second Saturday Salvage). We would love help welcoming customers and assisting them as they search for just the right door, fireplace mantel, etc. Volunteers also help customers load their vehicles. If you enjoy people you'll love being at the Ice House! We often get repeat customers and they enjoy sharing updates on their projects.

Mission Statement

To preserve, protect, and revitalize the historic fabric of Salisbury and Rowan County.

Description

Founded in 1972, Historic Salisbury Foundation is the only private non-profit organization in Rowan County whose sole mission is to protect our historic architecture and has been recognized as a leader in North Carolina preservation. We have placed protective covenants on 114 historic homes and buildings, many of which were previously endangered. Every house that is saved helps save an entire neighborhood and maintains the history of the community. There are many ways we make a difference:

  • Salvage architectural items from buildings that can't be saved and re-sell at our architectural warehouse for sustainability
  • Educate through docent-guided tours at our 1820 house museum, the Hall House
  • Host OctoberTour - the longest continuously running historic home tour in the state of North Carolina (50th Anniversary in 2025!)
  • Purchase neglected historic homes and stabilize them, then sell to someone who can complete the work.
  • Have a presence at city council and preservation commission meetings to advocate for historic preservation
  • Have community events throughout the year for behind-the-scenes restoration projects and fundraisers that help us save more properties.
  • Actively maintain archives on historic properties - available to the community for research.
