Denali National Park Assistant Volunteer Coordinator

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Denali National Park and Preserve hosts the largest volunteer program in Alaska, and we need your help! With over 500 individual volunteers each year who donate in excess of 65,000 hours of service, there’s a lot of work to do behind the scenes. Join us to support volunteers in this spectacular location.

In addition, the Denali National Park Volunteer Office also serves as the Alaska Region Volunteer Program Office. We assist, serve and advise the other 14 volunteer program managers at National Park Service sites in the state which have volunteer programs.

We need to process personnel paperwork, welcome and orient volunteers, respond to inquiries, support volunteer supervisors, plan large events, celebrate volunteer accomplishments, help with the program's digital and online presence, assist with US and intra-park mail delivery and pick up, and assist visitors at the Savage River area, performing informal wildlife education and disseminating park and area information.

This is a uniformed position; the volunteer is required to wear the Denali National Park and Preserve volunteer uniform.

This is a dual position, an office position two days per week and two days in the field per week.

Office Position Duties:

Assist the Volunteer Program Manager with various office chores as required. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Staff the volunteer office and assist volunteers in their positions, creating stewards for the park and national public lands.
  • Assisting with filing and mailing.
  • Data entry information into spreadsheets and databases.
  • Answering phones and taking messages.
  • May drive a government vehicle as needed.
  • Typing office correspondence.

Field Position Duties:

Volunteer will assist NPS staff by providing wildlife safety messages to park visitors at the Savage River area and occasionally at other trail heads and on trails in the front country (developed) area of the park.

  • Providing park visitors information about the park, trail, shuttle bus and road systems, natural history, and recreational opportunities through informal interpretive contacts
  • Protecting park resources by helping visitors understand park regulations and safety information.
  • Assisting park staff by staffing the Savage River Parking Area, as well as roving the popular trails within one mile of the respective trailheads.
  • Reporting emergencies, missing persons, or law enforcement concerns to park staff.
  • Helping with traffic control, litter pick-up, minor maintenance tasks, and other duties as needed.
  • Assisting with visitor concerns and emergencies where possible.
  • Promoting ethical wildlife watching practices.
  • Encouraging visitor compliance with closures.
  • Conveying bear/wildlife safety messages to the public in accordance with the park's Bear-Human Conflict Management Plan.
  • Reporting to the Alaska Region Communication Center (ARCC), following its protocols for radio use and procedures, including calling into service, calling out of service, reporting incidents, requesting assistance, etc.
  • Utilizing good teamwork abilities with other volunteers and park staff.

Every duty will strengthen the Volunteer-In-Parks Program at Denali National Park and Preserve. Civic engagement is key to accomplishing the National Park Service mission. Visits to national parks inspire people to plan another trip, to tell their friends, and often, to ask how they can help. Providing avenues for visitors and advocates of national parks to volunteer and "give back" is crucial to preserving the natural and cultural history of Denali National Park and Preserve; and a strong and responsive Volunteer Program is necessary to accomplish this.

Housing is either a shared cabin or an RV/trailer site with full hook-ups (electricity, water, sewage and propane), depending on which is available at the time of hire. Some funds for reimbursement to help defray the cost of traveling to Denali are authorized, amount is dependent upon length of stay.
